HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

1. Banning immigrants and refugees from crossing the borders of some states.
According to the 14th article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “Everyone has the
right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.” The act of refusing
immigrants and refugees, who have no other choice but to seek asylum on the doors of
other countries using force and coercion, depending on their race or religion is becoming an
international dilemma that needs to be addressed by the international community.
2. Torture in different prisons around the world.
“No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or
punishment” says the 5 th article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At least, 11
million people are sitting in prisons and subjected to torture with their rights and dues being
continually undermined. Despite the attempts made by the international community to stop
human right violations and torture in prisons, there are still deplorable insights on the
reality of life in different prisons regionally and internationally.
3. Discrimination in education against pregnant girls and adolescent mothers (teen moms) in Africa.
According to the United Nations, Africa has the highest rates of adolescent mothers
meanwhile the governments have banned those girls from going to school. African governments as well as the rest, worldwide, should ensure the right to education as the international legal obligation is to provide “all children, without any discrimination” the right. A number of African governments are working on adjusting the laws to provide all
children including girls (pregnant ones or mothers) however the injustice remains to be an
evident issue in the area.
